Marketing Vs. Advertising

Hey there, I’m Erica Sobba, bringing another marketing tip. Question: what’s the difference between marketing and advertising? Well, marketing is a very wide umbrella that encompasses all these different styles or techniques or strategies of getting your service in front of your ideal client. Advertising is one of those styles that costs money in order to get it in front of your ideal client. This includes flyers in a local magazine, maybe even a billboard.

But what most people recognize it as is Google Ads or Facebook Ads. I know that it costs money in order to get those flyers or pictures or your message in front of your ideal client, But the great thing about it is that you can really target who exactly is going to be seeing the things that you’re trying to say, the things that you’re trying to share about your service. Now, when it comes specifically to Facebook Ads, Facebook has such a great way of breaking down exactly who it is that you’re going to be in front of. You can break it down by demographics, where they live, what kind of money they make, whether or not they have children, if they have, what their education level is. You can also break it down by interests.

Are they interested in this public speaker or this public? Are they interested in this book or are they interested in these stores? Are they interested in this behavior? Maybe it’s home improvement or maybe it’s refinancing or maybe it’s decorating, whatever it may be you can target.

OK, “if they’ve shown an interest in this book or in the speaker, then I want my message to be in front of those people because those people are more likely to be inclined to read my message or my service, which then begins that process of, hey, let’s spend some time getting to know each other. Follow me on my Facebook page or my Instagram page so that you can learn a little bit more about who I am, what I do, and how I can help you.”

So that’s the difference between marketing and advertising. And I guess it’s not really a difference because advertising is a sub component of overall marketing. Either way, advertising is a really great thing to take advantage within your marketing strategy. If you have any questions about what that looks like specifically for you or how to do this within your business, I would love to talk with you about that and walk you through either how it works or how to do it.
